Sullivans Island
Sullivans Island is a town and a beach. The Fort Moultrie National
Monument is located on the island. Fort Moultrie is famous for
it's battles in the Revolutionary War and also Civil War. Sullivans
Island has beautiful beaches. Sullivans Island is a more slow
paced beach. The island is mainly a residential community. The
Island sits on the point of the opening to the Charleston harbor
so waves are not that high or rough and are actually calm waves
for children to enjoy. The most recognizable feature of Sullivan's
island is it's lighthouse.Commisioned on 1962 and officially
names "The Charleston Light", the Sullivans Island Lighthouse
replaced the Morris Island Lighthouse. The lighthouse at one
point was the second brightest in the Western Hemisphere with
28 million candle power. The lighthouse is not round like most
but is actually three sided. The three sided achitecture was
designed to withstand more brunt force winds from hurricanes
and storms. Architect Jack Graham was the designer.
